Maps: thirty and one Random

Thirty maps and one Random card sit in the picker. Each carries a default nation count that the client prints in exactly one place: the Rules tab of a private lobby.

The Single Player map picker on 2026-11-03: World selected, Giant World Map and Europe beside it, with MODE, DIFFICULTY, ECONOMY MODE and BOTS printed at 400.
What this shows where the counts come from: the picker itself prints no nation number, so the table below was read map by map in a lobby's Rules tab.Captured 2026-11-03Client v42.5Plate 1

Random—drawn at start

Random is the thirty-first card and has no number, because there is nothing to default to until it picks. Sorting the table by the number is the most useful thing you can do with it: the six maps at the bottom are duels in disguise, and the three at the top are campaigns you cannot finish in a sitting.

What the number actually is

It is the count of nations the map starts with. The client prints it as 61 (Map default) — the number, then a note that this is the map's own preference. It sits on a slider in the lobby's Rules tab, between BOTS and MAX PLAYERS, so a host can move it; what the register below records is where each map sits before anyone touches it. It is the AI count, not the human one.

Everything else follows from it: forty-nine nations on a European-sized map means borders everywhere and a short life for a passive player; six nations on Faroe Islands means a duel with room to breathe. The maps with the fewest nations are the ones worth practising on.

The count Steam does not have

The store page advertises 29 maps. The picker holds thirty plus Random, and the three maps we checked hardest — World at 61, Giant World Map at 97, Game of Thrones at 71 — are not edge cases. Store pages go stale; the client is what you play on. The table above is the client's.

Where to go next

Europe and Giant World Map have pages of their own because they are the two people ask about, and the editor is how the community maps in the picker's second tab get made.
